I'd like to welcome everyone back to CPS, a special welcome is extended to families new to Churchbridge and to our kindergarten students. The purpose of this blog is to give you a bit more information on our our school happenings and to gather your feedback. This year I will make an effort to contribute regularly.

Many of you have seen the Whiteline van parked outside of the school. As a staff we decided that we could support our students, parents and coaches by leasing a van to transport students to out of town games. Our budget will not be able to fully support the use of the van so we will need to ask students to contribute. I'd like to know how you feel- is it worth it to you to pay $5-$10 per trip for your child? Or would you prefer we use parent volunteers?

Asessippi Trip

It was wonderful to get to Asessippi on Friday. Although this was our second attempt (the first was postponed due to -40 temperatures) everyone had a great time and the weather was windy, but decent. Many thanks to the parents who came along and volunteered to supervise children on the ski and tubing hills and in the chalet.

Lions Club Donation

Great news at CPS! The Churchbridge Lions Club has generously donated money (almost $9,000) to fund the purchase of 3 Smartboards at our school. The boards will go in Mrs. Clarke's 4/5 room, Ms. Hollinger's French room and in Mr. Unchulenko's room. Lions Club president Cal Swanson presented the donation at our annual Christmas Concert. Sr. SRC presidents Michael Dirven, and Morgan Choptuik, and Jr. SRC presidents Brayden Fraser and Shelby Schmidt received the donation on behalf of the students. The Lions Club support is very much appreciated.

Drug Awareness Evening

We have a rescheduled date for our Drug Awareness evening. Constable Shenk from the drug and organized crime arm of the RCMP will be here in the CPS library on Thursday, November 4 at 7:00. Constable Shenk will provide information regarding drug use in our area as well as signs that may indicate drug abuse by youth. Hope to see you there!

Awards Night

We had a wonderful turnout for our annual Awards Night held on October 5. Students in grades 7-12 were acknowledged for their academic achievements and contributions to the athletic and leadership programs. I encourage students currently in grade 6 to strive for excellence by watching and learning from the older students- work hard, play hard and be involved in your school!

Football at CPS

Today, Friday, October 1, CPS will host a Senior football game at 4:00 on the school field . The Kamsack Spartans will be in town to play the Warriors. CPS students playing on the team include Kyle Dressler, Adam Marlowe, Sawyer Theis, Thomas Putland and Nick Munson. Jr. Warriors Colby Entz and Austin Putland will join in for the warm-up. The Grad. class will be providing burgers and snacks and our new sound system will be featured for the play-by-play. Our appreciation is extended to Coach Unchulenko and Leidl, Russ Theis, Bruce Krantz and all the players who made sure the field is in top shape for the game. Come on out and enjoy some football on this beautiful fall day- Go Warriors!

Assembly

We will hold an all school assembly at 11:10 on September 22nd. So far on the agenda:

We plan to introduce members of CPS fall sports teams: Cross Country Running, Volleyball and Golf.
Our new RCMP liason officer, Constable Jesse Manley will come to the assembly to answer any questions students or staff may have.
Joe DePape will present CPS with a Communities In Bloom award.
Student representative council members will be introduced.

All community members are welcome to attend!

Welcome Back!

Hello and welcome back to all students and staff. At CPS we have 153 students registered in kindergarten through grade 12. Registrations indicate an increase of 7 students from this time last year- it is great to be growing! Our staff consists of 14 teachers, 7 support staff, 3 bus drivers and 2 custodians. If you are interested in learning about CPS you may be interested in attending our first School Community Council meeting to be held in the library at 4:30 on Tuesday, September 21.

Assembly Jan. 18, 2010

We had a very entertaining and interesting school assembly this week:

Special guest, Grace Bjarnason spoke to the students about her privilige of being selected an Olympic Torch Bearer. She explained the history and design behind the Olympic Torch and described her experience carrying it. After assembly Grace kindly visited elementary classrooms and let students get a close look at the torch.

The Junior Band performed their selection very well. They also played Happy Birthday to all students celebrating birthdays in January.

Our Junior Boys basketball team was introduced by Coach Blair. Students were encouraged to cheer them on during their first home game.

Mrs. Kentel reported 28 students have registered to participate in school curling- excellent interest!

Ms. Hollinger and Mrs. Clarke explained a fitness challenge that the school will participate in. Mrs. Wirl is the school In-Motion coordinator.

Mrs. Clarke reported excellent turnout for the new after school Archery Program.

Constable Al Dmytryshyn spoke to all the students about incidents of harassment that have been taking place within the school and the community. He gave suggestions as to how victims of harassment may find help. After dismissing the Gr. 1-5 students, Constable Al explained the seriousness of various drug charges. He explained some of the methods the RCMP use to can elimiate drugs in the school: reporting to Crime Stoppers, use of drug-sniffing dogs, and sharing of information between the school and RCMP.

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2010 at CPS and thank you for taking time to check out my blog. I hope to make updates at least weekly. Students and staff seemed happy to be back after the Christmas Break. Personally, it was great to spend time with family and friends. We spent a couple of days skiing at Asessippi and traveled to Saskatoon to ring in the New Year.

The younger students are excited to have time to play in the snow. The Town crew has pushed a hill on the yard, and children are happy to do some sledding. Supervisors face some challenges trying to make sure all is orderly with sledders not colliding with climbers.

I am so pleased to see the archery program taking place in the school. I got a chance to observe the Gr. 4-5 Class in action today and all the students are really enjoying the experience. I am very appreciative of Mrs. Clarke and Mrs. Wirl for taking the training.

We are now looking ahead to next year and need to send in our projected student enrolments. If you are aware of a preschooler or a new family who will be moving in please let us know- the more students we identify, the higher our staffing component potential.

If you have an hour or two, try to come out to our SCC meetings. The next scheduled meeting is tomorrow, January 6 at 7:00 pm in the school library.
